"Satire as Apology: Or, What I Learned from the Chakyar"
Tuesday, June 30 in 206 Ingraham Hall at 1:30 p.m.
Using the Chakyar figure in the traditional theater art of Kerala known as Kutiyattam as a model, this paper will open with reflections on the limits that are often structurally imposed on what we are allowed to learn from. Specifically, the talk will challenge prevailing notions of "area studies" and their relationship to the humanities by analyzing certain intellectual habits that keep Asia in a ghetto within the humanities. By way of example, the Purusharthakuttu of the Chakyar, a kind of comic interlude within a larger Kutiyattam performance, will be examined for what it teaches us about the nature of satire. The apologetic function of satire is revealed in the Chakyar's biting wit and sometimes merciless roasting of his audience. Throughout the talk, the role of excellent language skills will be highlighted as the only way to overcome this marginalization of humanity from the humanities.

Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye is a story of Lucky Singh who plays a loveable thief, someone who even the Delhi police are extremely fond of. His modus operandi is to outsmart the people, chowkidars and policemen with his sharp mind and wit. He is an aspiring individual who loves the good things in life and is generally enamored by the lifestyles of the rich and affluent Delhi families. Lucky's journey from a middle class boy to a popular thief turns him into a flamboyant playboy who now wants more than just the riches. Now he needs the respect, the social standing of a city gentleman without sacrificing that reckless freedom he cherishes (the duality of having the freedom to steal).

Tuesday, July 21 in room 206 Ingraham hall - 1:30 p.m.
(Website)
WHAT do a 3,000-year-old Sanskrit epic, a ’20s-era jazz singer and Indonesian shadow puppets have in common? They’re all part of the eclectic cultural tapestry that is Sita Sings the Blues,” an 82-minute animated feature that combines autobiography with a retelling of the classic Indian myth the Ramayana, and that required its creator, the syndicated comic-strip artist Nina Paley, to spend three years transforming herself into a one-woman moving-picture studio. (From 2/13/09 review in The New York Times)
Film: Arabikatha
Wednesday, July 22 in room B10 Ingraham - 1:45 p.m.
In Malayalam with English subtitles
'Cuba' Mukundan (Sreenivasan) is an earnest Communist party-worker, whose life is completely in tune with the ideologies preached by the party. His earnestness, however, ruffles the feathers of industrial bigwig Kunjunni (Jagathy, in yet another 'avatar') and upcoming part leader Karunan. Mukundan's naiveness makes him an easy target, and against his misgivings, he is forced to leave for Dubai. Arabikatha traces the journey of Mukundan from here on.
