Course Information

SASLI offers elementary and intermediate levels of modern South Asian languages, as well as Sanskrit. SASLI will offer 3rd year Hindi and Urdu as well as the elementary and intermediate levels. SASLI prepares students for subsequent training domestically and abroad. SASLI is currently held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Students may only register for one language per summer. This 8-week program offers the equivalent of two full semesters of academic study and 160 contact hours. SASLI participants MUST complete the two consecutive 4-week sessions for a total of 8 weeks.

Upon completion of the program, students will receive 8 credits and a letter grade (A-F). Students can request a transcript from the Registrar's Office of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for coursework at SASLI.

Classroom hours of instruction are Monday through Friday, 4 hours each day, from 8:30 AM - 1:00 PM (with a break from 10:30-11:00 AM). Due to the intensive nature of the summer session, absences for reasons other than illness are allowed only in special circumstances.

The deadline to apply to SASLI is April 1, 2017. However, we encourage anyone interested in attending SASLI to apply early, as classes with low student interest may be cancelled. Decisions on what courses will be offered will be made in the spring semester.

Courses Offered - Summer 2017

Each course is offered at the elementary and intermediate levels as student enrollment warrants. Advanced Hindi and Urdu will be offered as well if there is sufficient enrollment. Elementary level courses expect no prior knowledge of the language. A SASLI course offers 160 contact hours.

Nepali will not be offered in SASLI 2017. Interested students should investigate the Cornell Summer Intensive Nepali Program.

Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Please be sure to apply to SASLI as early as possible to help ensure that your class will be offered.

Program Fees

Due to Federal Budget cuts, SASLI has had to re-negotiate its program fees.  However, all applicants who submit a complete SASLI application are eligible to receive a $1000 Fee Remission. Please note that there are some restrictions on combined funding.

The SASLI program fee for 2017 is $4,800. Program fees cover tuition and expenditures for social events. The program fee does not include the cost of textbooks, or living expenses. It does include the UW-Madison assessment fee. SASLI is open to undergraduates, graduate students and non-student professionals. UW Madison in-state undergraduates will be charged regular undergraduate tuition for 8 credits as posted on the UW Registrar's Office Website.

SASLI is an 8-week session and all students must enroll for the full session. All students will be billed for the full session at the start of SASLI and no refunds will be issued after the first Friday of classes. If you have an emergency and must leave SASLI, please contact SASLI administration before you leave, or you may lose all of your program fee. See the SASLI Refund page for more details.

Your bill is accessible through your My-UW account (click the 'Financial' tab). Payment is done through the University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of the Registrar Bursar's Office. If you have questions regarding payment procedures, deadlines, and notifications, the office can be reached directly at: tuition@em.wisc.edu. You may also contact Student Accounts and Cashiering at (608) 262-3611.

If you receive a FLAS or Fee Remission, these payments will be sent directly to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Bursar's Office, and will be listed on your My-UW account. If someone will be sponsoring you to attend SASLI (i.e. paying your tuition), please visit the 3rd-Party Payments page.
