What will classes look like in this virtual environment?
- Classes will meet for 20 hours a week for four hours a day, Monday-Friday, for four hours of synchronous class instruction per day. It is expected that students are available to be online for the class times, as well as have time to do homework, practice, and projects outside of class time.
- Course materials will be organized in Canvas, the learning management system at UW-Madison, and use a digital platform such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Webex for instructor-facilitated class meetings.
- The course content and format will be dynamic and can include:
- Synchronous all-class meetings
- Daily reflective questions
- Lectures and presentations
- Audio and video activities
- Assignments and tasks
- Student presentations and interviews
- Regular Formative and Summative assessments
- All activities, whether synchronous or asynchronous, will be teacher-led, facilitated, or moderated.
- In addition to classes, there will also be co-curricular activities to provide opportunities for language practice and use outside of class hours.
- SASLI staff and instructors are committed to students’ language learning goals and will provide support to ensure the highest quality of learning experience possible.

Absence Policy Summer 2021
Please visit the SASLI Absence Policy page for details. We do expect to need to be flexible and understanding during Summer 2021. We also expect that students will approach their SASLI studies seriously and with appropriate effort.
Should a student experience an extended illness or the need to care for an ill family member, we ask you to contact your instructor and SASLI (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible to make a plan.

If you are a FLAS or WISLI Tuition Scholarship student, please contact us before submitting the Pass/Fail option so that we can request this allowance on your behalf.
Similarly, if you are currently enrolled a in a degree-seeking program at UW-Madison, please contact SASLI before submitting the Pass/Fail option, as your process will be slightly different.
SAFLI and Project GO students should contact their program coordinator as pass/fail may not be allowed with these types of funding.

Tips for Succeeding at an Intensive Language Program
Do the work – Whether face-to-face or online, SASLI is a lot of work. This summers typical workload consists of 4hrs of synchronous class time, and another 4hrs of homework and review. The review time is critical for locking in concepts that you cover in class. If you’re looking for ways to spice up your review time, see the next point!
Go to Office Hours – Your instructors and TA’s are there to talk you through concepts from class and are a great resource for finding ways to review and practice in your own time. Office hours are the best way to make sure you have control of new grammar or structures before starting your homework and review time on your own.
Make a Plan – Whether for your review time or for group discussions, you need to make a plan. During your synchronous classes or while doing homework, note what doesn’t stick, and reach out to your peers and Instructors to plan how you will address those points in your next session. Think about script, reading out loud, asking questions, drills conjugating new verbs, etc.
Share What Works – Connect with your classmates to practice your target language and share your strategy for advancing. Connecting with your peers will not only help advance your technical skills in your target language, but also help built a support system and community to lean on now and in your future academic and career ventures.
Do the work – Whether face-to-face or online, SASLI is a lot of work. You’re only accountable to you. Take a moment every few days and really look at the time you are putting in, and the effort you’re putting into that time. If you are struggling, do not hesitate to reach out to your peers, instructors, or SASLI staff. We know this is an intense program and will do what we can to support you.

Tech troubleshooting during class
If you have trouble connecting, hearing, etc. during your class session, please take the following steps:
1) Close the browser and try reconnecting
2) For audio issues, try unplugging and re-plugging in your headphones
3) Make sure you are using Chrome
4) Make sure videos in the class are muted unless necessary
